In my early twenties, my mother received a life-altering diagnosis: stage 4 breast cancer. As she navigated those first difficult rounds of doctor’s appointments, I remember her sharing one particular piece of advice from her oncologist: avoid deodorants with aluminum. Surprised, I could only respond, “Then why are so many of us using them?”
That moment planted a seed of curiosity and concern within me. As an immigrant, I have always loved and believed in America—the land of freedom, innovation, and endless opportunity. This country represents the highest standards in so many ways, which is why I was shocked to discover that when it came to cosmetic safety, we weren’t leading the way.
By 2024, the European Union had banned over 1,600 substances in cosmetics and skincare due to concerns about their potential health risks, including carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity. In contrast, the United States had explicitly restricted only 11 ingredients under federal law. While U.S. regulations exist, they are far less comprehensive, leaving many ingredients in circulation that consumers may not be aware of.
Like many concerned consumers, I started searching for safe and effective skincare. I spent thousands of dollars on products labeled as “clean,” only to be repeatedly disappointed. Some were genuinely well-formulated but didn’t work for my skin, while others, despite their marketing, contained ingredients I personally wanted to avoid.
After experiencing countless instances of buyer’s remorse, I decided to take matters into my own hands. If I wanted skincare that aligned with my standards, I would have to create it myself. I spent years formulating and testing products that were both high-performing and crafted without certain ingredients I chose to exclude. Friends became my first supporters, urging me to share my creations—and that is how Skin Revolt was born.
This brand isn’t just for me; it’s for anyone searching for skincare that aligns with their values—without compromising on quality or performance. I take my commitment to every customer seriously, and I’m grateful for each person who joins this journey.
Let’s build something beautiful together,
- Jelena Petrovic, Founder of Skin Revolt
